During this hands on workshop we will start with a basic intro to Suminagashi and then move on to Bookbinding in the second half.

Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese paper printing technique. Using traditional methods, beautiful and completely unique prints can be achieved by floating and manipulating sumi inks on water.

Then moving on to use your printed papers to create your own notebooks during the second half of our workshop

We plan to set out on a journey to discover one of the most well-known and popular Japanese bookbinding methods by sinking deeper into the story, history and details of the craft.

We will introduce you to all necessary tools and materials, combining your hand printed Suminagashi papers along with Japanese koyori paper for the inner bindings and decorative corners. We will also experiment with hard-covers and crafting traditional title strips.

Working together with you step by step, following the basic four-hole binding and the beloved tortoise-shell stitch methods, everyone will craft and design up to 3 of your own unique notebooks to take home.

Each beautiful handcrafted book would make a great gift or as that special personal notebook. You will leave this workshop with basic knowledge of all techniques and tools to continue with both of these art forms in the future.
